The Army Institute of Law-AIL was established in Jul 1999 under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society. Army Institute of Law-AIL was inaugurated by Lt. Gen. H B Kala, PVSM, AVSM, SC, the then GOC-in-C HQ Western Command on 15 Jul 1999. It shifted to its permanent location at Sector-68, Mohali on 21 Jul 2003. AIL Mohali has been inaugurated by HE Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, President of India on 01 Dec 2003.
Army Institute of Law-AIL Mohali has an impressive architectural structure in the vicinity of Punjab and Haryana High Court. The building has administrative offices, class rooms with modern teaching aids, moot court room seminar room, Computer lab with Leased line Internet connectivity, spacious library with e-library section, faculty rooms with LAN and internet, conference hall with modern audio visual aids etc. The Campus also has the state-of-the-art Multipurpose Hall, Gymnasium, Generator room, MI Room, CSD counter, Cafe and other essential services. In Army Institute of Law-AIL the learning process is interactive as well as participative. Open discussions are also part of classroom teaching. The regular classes are made more useful by follow-ups in the form of assignments, seminars and projects in the afternoon sessions. In terms of practical learning various Moot-court competitions are held within the institute and selected students are sent for national level Moot-court competitions.
Army Institute of Law-AIL organizes visits to District Courts, High Courts and also to Lok Adalats to acquaint the students with practical aspect of legal process and legal system. The Army Institute of Law-AIL is running 5-year degree course in law after 10+2, primarily for the wards of serving and ex-servicemen of Army. However 20 percent seats are available for the civilians also. Out of this 15 percent are reserved for Punjab Residents and 5 percent for All India Civil Category. The teaching methodology adopted at Army Institute of Law-AIL covers participative classroom teaching, seminars, assignments, extension lectures, guided library sessions, project presentations/ reports, computer application, moot courts and clinical legal work.Complementary compulsory subjects have been introduced in first two years, in order to inculcate ethical and moral values. The students have to clear these subjects in order to be eligible for appearing in the semester examinations. The Army Institute of Law-AIL provides students, with extensive Library facilities to maximize their knowledge in the field of law.

Army Institute of Law-AIL believes that the asset of interaction is most essential to lay the foundation of a good lawyer. Interactive sessions for individual batches are held in the seminar hall; which has been constructed for this very purpose. The hostel has an intercom facility. Intercoms have been provided on each floor of both the hostels; by virtue of which the warden, the nursing assistant, lecturers can be contacted as and when required. Parents too can utilize this facility as they can directly call on the official college number, dial the requisite extension number and speak to their wards.
