College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences - COVAS Parbhani established on 18th may 1972 under Marathwada Agricultural University. Initially the college offered B.V.Sc. and A.H. degree programme of 4 years duration, which was later extended to 4.5 years w.e.f. 1975 and 5 years after 10+2 pattern w.e.f. 1995-96 when Veterinary Council of India implemented uniform course curriculum all over the country. From 1976 onwards the College introduced post-graduate education, which took a full-fledged shape in 1979-80. With the formation of MAFSU, this college is now a constituent unit of MAFSU.
The department of animal genetics and breeding was established with the establishment of College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences - COVAS Parbhani in year 1973 under MAU Parbhani. Initially UG programme was started. Later PG programme started in the year 1977. Up till now 32 students had successfully completed their M.V.Sc. degree from this department. Just now Department has established the Cytogenetic Laboratory which will help to detect the chromosomal abnormalities in dairy as well as other livestock.

College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences - COVAS Parbhani established the Poultry unit in 1975 in small cages of 30 bird’s capacity and thereafter 10 such cages were erected. In 1980 large shed as brooder house was constructed. In 1990 the California cage system type shed with 600 capacities was constructed for rearing layer bird. The pig unit was established in 1977 by bringing large white Yorkshire breed from England. At the same time horse unit, sheep unit and later on Osmanabadi goat unit was established. The department is also having a large farm. The total land holding of department is 54.5 ha out of which the land under cultivation is 35.6 ha and remaining land is used for grazing livestock. In 1996 the nomenclature of the department was change to Livestock Production and Management as per VCI norms.

In 1992, the feed mixing plant was commenced in College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences - COVAS Parbhani with erection of machinery to meet the feed requirements of different categories of animal and also feed was supplied to the different institutes under Marathwada Agricultural University. The major construction of different shed / building took place in the year 1977.
The P.G. courses were started on College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences - COVAS Parbhani in the year 1980 and up till now 34 students have completed their research on various aspects of Livestock Production and Management, Poultry production. The department is offering PhD course by research only and up till now two students have completed their Ph.D. The concerted efforts and the grit and determination of the following staff members cannot be ignored. It is due to their efforts the department has been developed now, these name includes: Dr. P.G. Sakhare, Dr. P. V. Gangakhedkar and Dr. P. M. Khedkar.
