Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier as it is named today, was officially opened as the Hawke´s Bay Community College by the Minister of Education, Phil Amos. Mr Amos laid the foundation stone, on 4 October 1975. In 1987 the Hawke´s Bay Community College was renamed the ”Hawke´s Bay Polytechnic”. The next name change - to the ”Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier” occurred in 1996, the Institute´s 21st year.
Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier is now regarded by the Ministry of Education as one of the exemplar tertiary education providers in New Zealand. The site on which the main Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier campus is based in Taradale was donated to the people of Hawke´s Bay at the time of the province´s centenary by the late Margaret Hetley and in memory of her husband, Arnaud.

It is situated half-way between the twin cities of Napier and Hastings, (approximately 15kms from each city), which together comprise the fifth largest urban area in New Zealand. Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier's twenty-seven hectare campus is well designed, pleasantly landscaped and spacious, and is located in Taradale, a delightful village, half-way between the twin cities of Napier and Hastings.
An architecturally designed student residential village is located opposite the Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier campus. There are twelve self-contained villas which are available in the holidays. These villas are perfect for families and small groups, and are close to wineries, golf courses and shopping centres. There is also a wide variety of accommodation from motels, to a selection of superbly presented boutique hotels and homestays.
The Twist Library provides study and research facilities in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our highly qualified and experienced librarians are available to assist students and staff utilise the wide range of resources that support study in all Eastern Institute of Technology - EIT Napier programmes. Distance students can also register for ‘Summer Borrowing’. Send an email to twist@eit.ac.nz with ‘Summer Borrowing’ in the heading and advise us of your name, student id, course, contact name and phone numbers (including cell phone number please) over the summer break and we will get Faulty approval and set you up for this. This means you will be able to use all the Library services, including the databases, over the holidays and keep your student login working.
