Government Arts College - Coimbatore had a very humble beginning when it was founded in 1852 as an Anglo-Vernacular School. It became a middle school in 1861. In 1867 it became a high school. In 1868, First of Arts (F.A.) classes were started and in 1869 the first University classes were started.
In 1870 it became a second grade college. Thus, Government Arts College - Coimbatore came into existence during the colonial rule long before the establishment of the University of Madras. The products of this college had actively participated in India’s freedom movement and thus, the classrooms of this ancient institution have determined the destiny of India in obtaining its freedom.
Government Arts College - Coimbatore has 16 Departments besides the Physical Education Department and the General library with permanent staff members, of which many hold Ph.D Degrees and M.Phil. Degrees. Presently this college offers 15 UG, 10 PG, 13 M.Phil. and 12 Ph.D. programmes under the regular stream and it offer 1 UG Diploma, 3 PG Diploma, 5 UG and 5 PG programmes under the self-supporting stream of Bharathiar University. Besides this, the college offers 3 UG courses in the evening college. In all, the Government Arts College - Coimbatore offers 67 academic programmes at present catering to the needs of students belonging to various walks of life and economic strata.
Government Arts College - Coimbatore vision is to impart quality general education combined with technology at all levels to the downtrodden and the weaker sections of the society by admitting SC, ST, MBC and BC students as per the reservation policy of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the mission is to develop in them a capacity to identify their own potential and form a holistic personality to ever promote national integration.

Some Departments also have separate Special Laboratories attached to them. There is a separate gallery for the students for conducting seminars, conferences, meetings and group discussions. This gallery contains Audio, Video, LCD projectors and computer equipments. There are facilities to record speeches and important discussions.
Placement and Guidance Cell of Government Arts College - Coimbatore was constituted in August, 2006. To fulfill the aims, the cell has been conducting free coaching classes for competitive examinations like civil services (UPSC), TNPSC examinations, Railway recruitment board exams, etc. To motivate and guide the students, the cell organized various personality development meetings and seminars by inviting IAS and IPS officers and other suitable persons from various industries.
