On May 27th 1909, the
Indian Institute of Science-IISc was established. It is the first example of a public-private partnership in India; an institution, whose development over 100 years is an evidence of the toughness of its foundations. The 400 acres of land on which
IISc stands was donated to J.N. Tata by the Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907 in Bangalore. Surprisingly, Tata did not want his name to be linked with the organization. His dream was to create an organization that would add to the growth of the country thus reflecting in its name.
IISc began with only two departments which were General and Applied Chemistry and Electr Technology. The first Director of the institute was Morris W Travers under whose guidance the main building, which is one of Bangalore’s landmarks today began to construct. The Departments of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Library were the earliest to be established. The Physics department came into being, when C.V. Raman became the first Indian Director of the Institute in 1933. The evolution of the Institute over the past one hundred years is the reflection of the development of science and technology in the country. Owing to its long history, strong tradition of academic research and an atmosphere that favors scholarly activity has made the Institute what it is today.
Thanks to
IISc, many new areas of research have been established for the first time in India ranging from Biochemistry to Aerospace Engineering to nucleate research and development. The faculty and alumni of the Institute are the reason for the establishment of many new institutions and programs across the country, which reflects the immense contribution of this organization to national growth and development. Homi Bhabha came up with the idea of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and an Atomic Energy Program while he was working in the Department of Physics. Vikram Sarabhai, who is the founder of India's space program, was an alumnus. After his premature death, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was built under the leadership of Satish Dhawan, who at the same time held the position of the Director of the Institute with the greatest distinction.
The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Kharagpur was established by the director of
IISc, J.C.Ghosh at the time when much of the activity in engineering was started at the Institute. G.N. Ramachandran, Harish Chandra, S. Ramaseshan, Brahm Prakash, A. Ramachandran, C.N.R. Rao and R. Narasimha are few people who have been associated with the Institute as students or faculty.
Indian Institute of Science-IISc offer various Master's degree programs in Engineering, post-B.Sc. program in sciences and Ph.D. programs in a vast spectrum of disciplines in science and engineering. The research laboratories are very well equipped. The library and computational facilities are also amongst the finest in India.
IISc is the venue for many important national and international academic events and it hosts hundreds of visitors from India and abroad every year. Since the face of science and engineering research is changing very rapidly Institute has initiated many new activities. Interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs in Mathematical Sciences, Chemical Biology, Earth System Science, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Nanoengineering for Integrated Systems are a few among them.
The Indian Institute of Science-IISc like any other institute hopes to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research in a vigorous fashion in the coming years.
