Khalsa College, Amritsar the premier-most institute of higher learning, was established by the leaders of the Singh Sabha Movement in 1892. They were inspired by the lofty ideals of the great Gurus. They planned it to be a growing institution which would strive forever to achieve high degree of excellence of mind, body and soul for the welfare of the youth. Many new course based on Modern Techniques in education have been started for CET, PMT and other competitive exams. The purpose being to make the students eligible for job oriented courses. The objective has been to serve the needs of the community and the area in a more purposeful and rewarding way in this age of exacting competition.
Khalsa College campus covers an area of over 330 acres and provides latest amenities for higher education. The main college building is a master-piece of architecture after the Indo-Mughal-Sikh Style, Gothic in design and spacious in dimensions.
Khalsa College is a composite institution with four wings consisting of faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences, Commerce and Business Administration, Sciences, the College of Agriculture and the Institute of Computer Sciences. The campus also houses Khalsa College of Education, Khalsa College for Women, Khalsa College Girls High School, Khalsa College Boys Senior Secondary School and Khalsa College Public School.
A fully computrized library with bar code system provides excellent facilities to the scholars. The total number of books in the library exceeds 1,60,000. It has distinction of housing one of the finest collection of books in whole state. There has been constant increase in library facilities for the students. The library remains open on all working days from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm. There is a Seperate research and refrence section, Periodicals and Magzine Section, Journals Section and Genereal Reading Section. Open self system has been extended to students of degree classes also. There is also vacotional guidance centre as an allied branch of centeral library and sectional library for the department of agriculture, Botany, Chemiistry, Commerce, Physics and Zoology under the charge of professors concerened. Khalsa College has procured a large no. of back volumes of the subject journals for Post-Graduates and Research Section. National Service scheme aims at creating in the students a sense of participation in nation building through programmes such as eradication of illiteracy, slum clearance, road building, voluntary health service, agricultural development, family planning, National Integration Campaign and Career Guidance for students and to inculcate a spirit of equality and fraternity in all section of society. Khalsa College has three units of N.S.S. for boys and one for girls. Students are encouraged to join N.S.S. in large numbers.
Khalsa College Cultural literary competitions, provide healthy channel to the students for the proper and systematized expression of their creative urges. Arrangements have been made for the establishment of various hobby clubs during the session.
The students of the Khalsa College are divided into small groups and each group is under the charge of a lecturer, known as the guidance tutor. He supervises and guides the students for helping them to attain their goals and ambitions in life. To achieve this end, Placement Cell has been set up in the college. The Centre aims at integration of the task of character building, career guidance and development of all round personality as a composite project.
Physical Education Department of the Khalsa College provides facilities for preparing students for various University, State and National level competitions in various games and sports. The department has to its credit a voluminous contribution in creating sportsmen and athletes of Olympic, International and National standards. The Department also provides facilities for teaching of Physical Education up to B.A. level.
Khalsa College hostels provide modern amenities and healthy living conditions. To provide for a constructive channel for the expression of various faculties amongst our students, to facilitate their all round moral, mental and physical development and to make their leisure constructively recreational, adventurous and socially useful, great emphasis is laid on youth and cultural activities. Khalsa College Youth Welfare Club, with the active help and assistance of the Department of Youth Services of Punjab Govt. and the G.N.D.U. Youth Welfare Department, organises Youth Leadership and adventure camps, guidance tours and discussion groups, inter/state tours, hiking and trekking exercises, cycling excursions, social work campaigns and other such activities.
