Leeds Trinity University College began in the early 1960s when plans were laid to provide two Roman Catholic teacher training colleges for Yorkshire. The Leeds Trinity University College often uses the shorter name Leeds Trinity, and was previously called Leeds Trinity & All Saints and Trinity & All Saints College (TASC). Trinity College for women and All Saints College for men opened on the same Horsforth site in 1966. The two colleges merged in 1980. In 1974 the range of degrees was widened to include professional studies in Management and Media. During the 1990s postgraduate provision was extended beyond Education to Journalism, Victorian Studies and research degree opportunities and a number of single honours academic programmes were launched. In 1991 Leeds Trinity University College was designated a College of the University of Leeds, and established a formal accreditation agreement with the University in 2001. From its inception, Leeds Trinity has offered degrees and certificates of the University of Leeds.
Leeds Trinity University College was one of the first institutions in the region to deliver Higher Level Teaching Assistant courses and also operates the Leeds SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training programme). Leeds Trinity University College hosts the Yorkshire and the Humber Comenius Centre (promoting languages in schools), the Schools History Project and is part of the North Leeds Networked Learning Community. As an independent Roman Catholic foundation, Leeds Trinity University College is committed to creating a caring environment in which to cultivate education for a professional life. Leeds Trinity University College serves staff and students from all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. Investors in People (IIP) status was awarded in 2001, in recognition of Trinity & All Saints's ongoing investment in staff development. The Leeds Trinity University College residential campus is located off Brownberrie Lane, in the town of Horsforth (also described as a suburb of Leeds), six miles (10 km) from Leeds city centre. Leeds Trinity University College is set in 40 acres (160,000 m2) of landscaped grounds and offers a wide range of facilities to students during term-time and to conference visitors the rest of the year. The Andrew Kean Learning Centre opened in 2003, offers high specification personal computers, a broadband internet link and a 24-hour access computing suite. The building also houses library stock of over 130,000 items including journals, audio-visual materials and multi-media collections. There are several types of accommodation in Leeds Trinity University College, varying in standard/en-suite and catered/self-catered. The following buildings are so named: Kirkstall, Ripon, St. Albans, Norwich, Whitby, Fountains, Shrewsbury, Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Trinity Close. The buildings appear to be named after famous abbeys within England,with the exception being Trinity Close. This the newest building complex has a fairly obvious namesake. Recently, permission has been granted for development of new halls of residence, as some of the above listed buildings were built when the University first opened, and are perceived as outdated. Two Halls were demolished in 2009 as new building work took place. This work is due to be completed by the start of the 2010/11 Academic Year. It was revealed in October that the new Halls of Residence would be named "All Saints Court" in recognition of All Saints, as part of the new University College's heritage and identity.
