National Institute of Immunology-NII is an autonomous institution supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The National Institute of Immunology-NII is committed to advanced research addressing the basic mechanisms involved in body's defence, host-pathogen interactions and related areas with a view to contribute to the creation of an internationally competitive intellectual knowledge base as a sustainable source of innovative futuristic modalities of potential use in health care.
National Institute of Immunology-NII imparts long term research training leading to a PhD degree of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Applications for the PhD programme are invited from candidates interested in pursuing scientific career in biological and related sciences. A detailed announcement describing the selection procedure for admission to the PhD programme is displayed on the Institute’s website and advertised in all national newspapers & Employment News in the month of October/November every year for the academic session that begins in July. Around thirty to thirty five scholars are admitted to the programme each year, selected on the basis of a national competitive written examination for short-listing the applicants & followed by interviews of these short-listed candidates held at the National Institute of Immunology-NII sometime in June. Minimal academic qualifications required are: M. Sc. or equivalent in any branch of science, or M. Tech. or MBBS or M. V. Sc. or M. Pharm. or equivalent qualification recognized by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, along with first division or an equivalent grade or at least 60% of aggregate scores in all major examinations from Senior Secondary Certificate (10+2) onwards.
National Institute of Immunology-NII provides opportunities for outstanding students in post-graduate programmes to carry out project work under the supervision of the Institute’s scientists towards partial fulfilment of their postgraduate degrees (of at least SIX months’ duration; session I: Jul-Dec; session II: Jan-Jun).
The Small Animal Facility of the National Institute of Immunology-NII procures, breeds and supplies defined strains of mice and rats to the scientific community of the National Institute of Immunology-NII. Apart from the breeding and maintenance of defined strains of mice, undefined stocks of other laboratory animals are also raised. The propagation of all defined strains is done in a three-tier system. Mice in foundation stock consist of pedigreed identified pairs which are reared in restricted area under barrier facility. The animals from this colony provide breeding pairs for the pedigreed expansion stock colony for expansion purpose as well as replace pairs in foundation stock. The animals in production stock consist of randomly mixed animals from foundation as well as expansion colonies which are raised in the conventional manner. The selection of sibling pairs at these three levels is done in such a way that all the descendants of each strain can be traced to a common ancestral breeding pair within seven generations of inbreeding. In addition to the above, non-pedigreed stocks are also bred without maintaining their pedigree records for use in experimentation.
Animals are examined routinely by a veterinarian and trained animal care technicians ensure that they are free of contagious diseases. Health quality procedures are implemented to maintain isolation between cages. Handling routinely includes use of sterilized bedding, autoclaved cages, feed and zero bacteria/autoclaved drinking water. Procedures for barrier facilities include personnel showers prior to entry and sterilized clothing as well as masks. Immunocompromised strains are maintained in animal isolators of international standards.
The Bioinformatics Center (BIC) at NII serves as an information resource and state of the art computational facility for researchers both in National Institute of Immunology-NII and outside in the field of molecular biology and immunology. The center is also engaged in advanced research in the area of computational and structural biology. A major activity of the center has been development of databases and softwares which permit correlating the sequence and structural features of various biosynthetic proteins to the chemical structure of the metabolites they synthesize. Softwares have also been developed for structure based prediction of protein-peptide interactions and analysis of regulatory motifs. The center is associated with several collaborative projects with other experimental groups at National Institute of Immunology-NII as well as other institutes in India. These projects relate to work on Mycobacterium tuberculosis and various other aspects of immunity and infection. The center has contributed to the discovery of new biosynthetic pathways and elucidation of novel mechanisms of immune recognition.
