Sri Krishnadevaraya University had its beginning as the Post Graduate centre of Sri Venkateswara University in the year 1968. It has gained autonomy in the year 1976. Fulfilling the desires of the people of the region, the Autonomous Post Graduate centre was given the status of the University in the Year 1981. Initially, Sri Krishnadevaraya University functioned as a unitary residential University. It was conferred the status of an affiliating University in the year 1987. Presently, it is catering to the higher educational needs of the revenue districts of Anantapur and Kurnool. The Post Graduate centre at Kurnool was brought under the jurisdiction of the University in the year 1993. Sri Krishnadevaraya University is contributing to the cause of higher education through 112 affiliated degree colleges of which 7 are meant exclusively for women. The other colleges affiliated to the University include 26 Colleges of Education, 2 Oriental Colleges, 2 Law Colleges and one Engineering College. 20 affiliated colleges under the University are also offering post graduate courses in various disciplines. Having acquired national and international expertise in the fields of Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management, and Law, the University is ambitious of becoming a centre of excellence in engineering education as well. It seeks to effectively cater to the needs of the people of the region by an appropriate blend of science and technology. It seeks to contribute to the advancement of knowledge and employment generation in the region.
Post-Graduate courses and research programmes are presently offered by the University at the University College, Anantapur, and at the Post Graduate centre, Kurnool. Sri Krishnadevaraya University offers 38 post graduate courses through 28 departments. 11 post graduate courses are being conducted at the P.G. centre, Kurnool through 8 departments. The University envisages its growth in terms of promoting equity and access, relevance, quality, and accountability to redeem the irredeemable backwardness of the region through a massive educational uplift and contribution to a knowledge society, which alone offer the key to social change and economic emancipation.
The Tenth Plan Visiting Committee’s recommendations were highly positive in regard to the Sri Krishnadevaraya University’s functioning. The UGC allocated Rs. 350 lakhs for funding departmental and central facilities at the campuses at Anantapur and Kurnool. In addition, in its academic recommendations, the Visiting Committee expressed the view that the University is playing a vital role in the study and analysis of the drought situation. Sri Krishnadevaraya University has observed that this advanced research on drought needs further strengthening since some of the departments are actively engaged in working on alternative strategies to mitigate drought. This inter-departmental approach adopted by the University, the UGC said, is holistic and combines theory and practice and thus this facility is to be strengthened and needs to be recognized as development radar.
The Central library of the Sri Krishnadevaraya University is provided with a rich and varied collection of 114000 books, 190 periodicals and 118 magazines and other holdings enriched primarily on account of the generous support extended by the UGC. The open access facility can be availed by the students from 8:30 am to 8:30 pm on all working days and between 10:30 am to 5:00 pm on all holidays. During X plan, the allocation for books has increased from Rs.28 lakhs in IX plan to Rs.42.5 lakhs of which Rs.10 lakhs is earmarked for the library at the PG centre, Kurnool. The library extends photocopying facilities for the benefit of the users. The library consists of a separate section for helping the students to prepare for the competitive examinations at various levels. The library has back volumes on the stacks numbering 13,600. There are further one SC/ST Book Bank and a Competitive Examinations Cell in the library for helping the students of Sri Krishnadevaraya University to prepare for competitive examinations at various levels. INFLIBNET facility, offering a wide range of services, is also available in the university library. Along with software for University Libraries (SOUL).
Sri Krishnadevaraya University College provides facilities for a wide range of sports and games. It has a modern gymnasium which is equipped with the latest gymnastic and fitness gadgets like the multigym. The Gym provides facilities for indoor games like shuttle badminton, table-tennis, chess, carroms, besides Weightlifting and malkhamb. The renovated University stadium provides facilities for cricket, foot ball, and athletics. There are also courts for ball badminton, basket ball, volley ball, tennis, etc. Sri Krishnadevaraya University hosts All India and South zone Inter-University games competitions regularly. Intramurals are conducted annually. In addition, intercollegiate sports and games are conducted quite frequently in the campus. Coaching camps in different disciplines are held periodically in an atmosphere congenial to the development of skills in different sports and games. The Computer centre was started as an independent unit in the University in 1987. Initially it started to function as a resource and services centre and subsequently contributed to the spread of computer education in the University both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The centre organizes regular training programmes for the faculty and the non-teaching staff to promote their computer knowledge.
The Health centre caters to the needs of students, staff, non-teaching staff, visiting faculty of the Sri Krishnadevaraya University and to a limited extend to the needs of the surrounding cluster of villages. The Health centre as yet does not have in-patient therapy units. An expansion of the physical infrastructure of the Health centre is under way and when the work is completed, limited in-patient services will also be offered. There are three Medical Officers manning the Health centre. Separate hostels for men and women students are available in the Sri Krishnadevaraya University. As the accommodation in the hostels is limited, admission into the college does not confer the right to a seat in the hostel. Admission rules of the hostels may be obtained from the Hostel Office.
