The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU Chennai has been established by the Government of Tamil Nadu by an Act of State Legislature. It was inaugurated by His Excellency Thiru K.R. Narayanan, President of India on September 20th 1997. The University started functioning from 03.10.1997.The main objectives behind the establishment of this law university was to impart quality legal education and to promote the knowledge of law among masses.
The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU Chennai is striving towards improving the communal harmony and to achieve the goal of egalitarian society through legal literacy programmes.The University has been making progress towards meeting international standards in the academic community, including active collaborative initiatives with leading institutions around the world. The University also conducts examinations in various branches of law, and awards degrees and diplomas recognized by the Government of India and many other countries around the world.
The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU Chennai is unique in terms of the identity given to the undergraduate and postgraduate education. The School of Excellence in Law was established to primarily focus on undergraduate education. At the postgraduate level, the University offers advanced degrees through its Departments of Law. The advanced degree programs offered include Business Law, Constitutional Law & Human Rights, Intellectual Property Laws, International Law and Organizations, Environmental Law & Legal Order, and Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Administration. Under the auspices of the Career Guidance & Placement Cell, special sessions have been arranged with the following foreign universities regarding the higher education and placement opportunities National University of Singapore, Queensland University of Australia.
The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU Chennai Library has 9540 books and subscribing 55 National and International journals. At present the library has a good collection of books in various sub disciplines of Law. In addition, Books on various subjects like information Technology, English, Political Science, Sociology, History, Biographies etc. are also available. It has a good reference collection viz. AIR Manual , American Jurisprudence, Corpus Juris Secundum, Halsbury’s Laws of England, International Law Reports, U S Supreme Court Reports, Words and Phrases. The back volumes of 65 journals are also available.
The Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University - TNDALU Chennai Library has a good collection of CD ROMs like Supreme Court Cases – Full –Text, AIR Supreme Court – 1950-2004, AIR High Courts on CD – ROM 1985 –2004, Legal 2000 Statutes of India: Central Acts and multimedia on Mahatma Gandhi, Intellectual Property Rights: Key to new wealth. The Library has 15 computers for the students to browse the legal websites throughout the world and CD – ROMs for effective learning with I mbps broadband connection Legal Literacy Programme is implemented in Co-ordination with the N.S.S Units functioning in various affiliated law colleges. N.G.O.'s and advocates are also involved in the programme.
