The New University of Ulster - Coleraine incorporates Magee College founded in 1865 in Derry. Magee College was a college of the Royal University of Ireland from 1880 and later became associated with the University of Dublin (better known as Trinity College) when the Royal University was dissolved in 1908 and replaced by the National University of Ireland. In 1953 Magee College broke its links with Dublin and became Magee University College. It was hoped that this university college would become Northern Ireland's second university after The Queen's University of Belfast. However, this did not happen and instead it was subsumed into the New University, primarily as a result of the unwillingness of the Unionist government at Stormont to have the second university sited in overwhelmingly nationalist Derry, in which "The Troubles" were just beginning to break out. The decision caused an outcry at the time. The University of Ulster - Coleraine was built at Coleraine as part of the UK government's expansion of higher education in the 1960s. Coleraine today is the university's headquarters and main campus. The University of Ulster - Coleraine incorporated the campus site of the former Ulster Polytechnic in 1984. This was the first, and as of 2010, only merger in UK higher education whereby what is now called a plate glass university merged with what would now be a post-1992 university.
The University of Ulster - Coleraine currently maintains 5 sites across Northern Ireland, as well as one "Online" site. In February 2009 the university announced the movement of many courses from the Jordanstown campus to the main Belfast campus and a consolidation of student numbers at Coleraine and the reuse of university grounds for a business park.
The north coast University of Ulster - Coleraine town of Coleraine, located beside the River Bann, is the largest and busiest town on the Causeway Coast in Northern Ireland. The town forms part of the area known as the “Triangle” linking the nearby coastal resorts of Portrush and Portstewart. Both are popular residential locations for students and staff. For those with an interest in outdoor activities the Causeway Coast is perfect. Water sports including surfing, sailing, rowing and angling are popular. For walking enthusiasts dedicated routes within the “Triangle” take in long sandy beaches and dunes, follow dramatic cliff lines and meander inland into sheltered woodlands.
The University of Ulster - Coleraine campus is situated on the northern bank of the river, less than a mile from the centre of the town. With views of the Causeway Coast and the Donegal hills in the distance the campus consists of custom-built facilities for teaching, learning and research. The campus has a warm and friendly atmosphere which radiates a strong community feel. It is set within 312 acres of landscaped and mature parkland containing tranquil garden areas, the Guy L. Wilson Daffodil garden and the Millennium Arboretum.
Learning facilities underpin the University of Ulster - Coleraine learning experience and the campus has an ongoing investment programme for our lecture theatres, teaching laboratories and studios. Student learning facilities are also provided for via a modern £3.5 million Learning Resource Centre (LRC) which opened in 2008. Situated at the heart of the campus the LRC offers study and learning facilities via 230 networked computers and a further 450 personal study spaces. Mirroring the rest of the campus the LRC is fully Wi-Fi enabled for laptop users. Computer access, printing and photocopying facilities are available at the open access IT suite 24 hours a day.
Special collections at University of Ulster - Coleraine include the Henry Davis gift of early printed books and fine bindings, the Headlam-Morley library of books, pamphlets and manuscripts relating to World War I and the Peace Treaty, the Paul Ricard library relating to World War II, the Henry Morris collection of Irish material, the microfiche English linguistics collection and the Stelfox natural history collection. The John Hewitt library and the Francis Stuart archive of literary manuscripts are recent additions.

As an innovative University we encourage innovation through a policy of providing incubation space within a Faculty context, alongside related academic areas, rather than in isolation. With its pristine Blue Flag beaches, championship golf courses and views of Donegal to the north west and Scotland to the north east, the dramatic coastline is considered one of the most scenic in Europe. Situated just outside Bushmills, the Giant’s Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage site is the most visited tourist attraction in Northern Ireland. It also gives the Causeway Coast its name. The causeway, with its 40,000 vertical basalt columns, form distinct "stepping stones", from the cliff foot down into the sea. According to legend this was the path built by the giant Finn MacCool to allow him to fight the Scottish giant on the other side. In reality the causeway was formed approximately 60 million years following a vast volcanic eruption that formed the extensive nearby Antrim plateau.
