Description
The company started the business from video rental shops. After sometime, it started DVD by mail, video on demand and some other related services. Erol's was overtaken by the company in the year 1990, which increased the store count of the company by 250. The company established the Blockbuster Music in 1992, after it had bought two music retail chains named Music Plus and Sound Warehouse. In 1993, the company combined with Viacom and later in 1994, Blockbuster was bought by Viacom. The company had also started its business in the United Kingdom by acquiring the
Ritz Video chain in 1990s. The total count of the employees of the company as of 2004 were approximately 60,000 and had over 9,000 stores in total. It has around 500 stores in the country and has the operations in 17 nations across the world. It was on 23rd of September, 2010 that the company became bankrupt. Later on 6th of April, 2011, the company along with its 1,700 store was purchased by Dish Network, which is a satellite television service provider company. After the acquisition, 200 branches were closed by the new owner company in July 2011. In the falling year 500 more branches were closed and in 2013, the number of branches closed were 300.
