Bengal Engineering and Science University - Howrah was established in 1856 at Shibpur, Howrah. The University is situated in the sylvan surrounding on the western bank of the Hoogli River in Howrah, opposite the city of Kolkata.
Initially
Bengal Engineering and Science University - Howrah was known as Bishop's College and the college was renamed to Calcutta Civil Engineering College on 24 November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff. From 1865 to 1879 the College worked as Civil Engineering Department of Presidency College, Kolkata. In 1880 the college moved to its new and permanent home, the lush campus at Bishop's College, Howrah. From 12 February, 1920, the name was once again changed to Bengal Engineering College B.E. College Shibpur. The word Shibpur was later deleted from the title on 24 March, 1921.
Bengal Engineering and Science University - Howrah has a lush green campus, with many ponds. In the campus, there is a four storied central academic building, an eight storied academic-cum-administration building, a workshop complex, a three storied building for material science which also has a part of the Computer Science and Technology department and (linked with a small sky bridge to the other part of the department in the main academic building), two canteens and a university auditorium.

Bengal Engineering and Science University - Howrah, there are several hostels out of which the 1st and 2nd year students are provided with accommodation in Hostel Nos. 7, 8, 9 & 11 while Hostel Nos. 14, 15 and 16 are used to accommodate the PG and few 3rd year UG students. A number of single seater residence halls like Richardson Hall, MacDonald Hall, Sen Hall, Sengupta Hall and Wolfe den Hall house the 3rd and 4th year Under Graduate students. The campus also has a well-resourced gymnasium and hospital. There is also a model school named BE College Model School within the campus.
