Lakeridge Health was established as a medical and psychiatric hospital and was the first hospital in North America. In the year 1987, it was renamed as the Whitby General Hospital.

Lakeridge Health Whitby is a thirty-two bedded hospital that offers palliative care, dementia, Home Hemodialysis, Ambulatory Rehabilitation Center, dialysis services and rehabilitation to the patients suffering from stores and brain injuries. In the year 1999, the hospital established a sixteen-bed geriatric assessment unit and the unit was later expanded to thirty-two beds in the year 2003. The Geriatric unit offers continued rehabilitation services to the
Elderly people.
