National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata was established on 10th December 1975 in Kolkata as an Autonomous Organization under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.The Institute, presently conducts the degree course in Homoeopathy viz Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery [B.H.M.S.] since 1987 and Post - Graduate course i.e. Doctor of Medicine in Homoeopathy [M.D.(Hom.)] in three subjects viz Organon of Medicine, Repertory and Materia Medica since 1998-99.
The Aims and Objectives of
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata to promote the growth and development of Homoeopathy, to produce graduates and post graduates in Homoeopathy, to conduct research on various aspects of Homoeopathy, to provide medical care through Homoeopathy to the suffering humanity, to provide and assist in providing services and facilities for research, evaluation, training, consultation, and guidance related to Homoeopathy, to conduct experiments and develop patterns of teaching in under - graduate and post - graduate education on various aspects of Homoeopathy.
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata is functioning in its own campus measuring about 16 acres of land at Block - GE, Sector - III, Salt Lake, Kolkata - 700 106, with a total floor space of about 1.8 lakh square metres with effect from 11.08.1986.A 250 - seated Boys Hostel, a 70 - seated Girls Hostel and a Guest House are also available in the same campus. We also have a Staff Quarters on a plot of land measuring about 9 acres close to the Institute campus within Salt Lake.
The chief executive of
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata is the Director. The Management of the Institute is under the control of a Governing Body constituted by the Dept. of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. The financial matters are supervised by the Standing Finance Committee, constituted by the Govt. of India. The Library & Information Service Division was established in 1976 to act as an aid for the development of research and training in Homoeopathy. The Library constitute a major resource for learning, teaching and research. The Library has created computerized database on micro - documents of Homoeopathy. Internet Service facility is also available in this division.
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata also provides reprographic services as well as Current Awareness Services(CAS) to its readers. Loose Journals and reference books are not lent out. It also provides inter - library - loan services and audio - visual services to its readers. Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) service, reprography, binding, photography, videography, etc. are provided. The Library remains open during college hours. It has open access. The reading room facility is made available to both inside and outside readers. The Library also gives its reference service through direct reference tools and text service for advancement of learning. It has the necessary infrastructure and facilities including electronic information systems to meet the requirements of all students / researchers / faculty members of the Institute and outside people.
At
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata, there is a Herb Garden about 25 acres at Kalyani, about 60km away from the Institute, envisaged for acclimatizing exotic species which are generally imported in order to save foreign exchange and to build up repository of authentic specimens of medicinal plants for use by students and researchers. The herb garden has maintained 90 different species of medicinal plants including 10 exotic species, which are high altitude, and cold climate plants. These exotic species has been successfully acclimatized in the genetic plain of West Bengal. Further studies are in progress. Besides maintaining plantation of indigenous medicinal plants recommended by Central Assistance Scheme 3 species have been introduced during the period under report i.e. Ocimum killimandscaricum, Sambacus javanica, Stereospermum, Sauveolens. Achillea Millefolium, Echinacea purpura and Conium Maculatum are notable among the exotic species which has been introduced during the period under report.
Today
National Institute of Homeopathy - NIH Kolkata consists of an Undergraduate and Postgraduate sections with an auditorium of 800 seating capacity, a hospital having an outpatient dept. and a 60 bedded inpatients dept. along with investigative facilities.
