Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit is BC’s Aboriginal public post-secondary institute. NVIT was formed as a private institute in 1983 by the founding bands of Coldwater, Nooaitch, Shackan, Upper Nicola and Lower Nicola Bands. Working from a basement in the downtown core of Merritt, three instructors taught thirteen students the basics of what is now our Natural Resource Technology program.
The program was taught in an environment that promoted traditional ways and fostered student success, a vision that sticks with Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit today. Gradually building its program offerings to address Aboriginal community needs such as socio-economic marginalization, environmental concerns and political issues with programs like Social Work, Natural Resource Technology and Aboriginal Community Economic Development, NVIT became and still remains a unique and important public post-secondary institute in Canada.
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit is located at Belshaw Street Merritt, British Columbia. Institute offers different kind of course with various specializations. In 1995, institute was designated as a Provincial Institute under the British Columbia College and Institute Act making our programs and courses accredited within the province. After spending years in the downtown core of Merritt, the long awaited Eagles' Perch campus opened in 2002. Five years later, another campus was added in Vancouver along with the opening of much needed student housing in Merritt. Construction began in the fall of 2009 in Merritt on the Lecture Theatre / Daycare building which will open in the spring of 2010.
Growth has also come in our enrolment as communities outside of the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit , like Bella Coola, Kingcome Inlet and Chase, took advantage of our renowned Community Education Department last year, taking programs important to the unique needs of their community and community members. Education is now more accessible than ever here at NVIT where students can earn credits toward a university degree on campus in Merritt or Vancouver, online or in their own community.
Looking back, growth has come from all facets but the commitment and vision of Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit and it’s supporting communities remains the same. Exploring knowledge from an Aboriginal perspective is giving our people the Education, Strength and Leadership we need to enhance our communities. NVIT offers a friendly, culturally supportive environment allowing to learners to gain career training, upgrading skills and/or earn credits towards a Bachelor of Social Work degree, Associates degree, Diploma, Certificate.
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit is proud of its diverse First Nations student population. With over 75% of its student body coming from outside of the Nicola Valley and across Western Canada, we have a breadth of Aboriginal traditions and values throughout the student body and Institute. As BC's Aboriginal public post-secondar institute, we're please to share that in 2008-09 NVIT’s student body reflected 60% (122) of BC’s First Nations communities, as well as First Nations communities in seven other provinces and territories.
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit library is designed to meet the learning and teaching needs of students and staff. The library promotes the ongoing development of research skills and independent study habits to encourage lifelong learning among students, and provides support for curriculum development among staff. As a partner in BC's Electronic Library Network, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit co-operates with other post-secondary libraries to provide expanded access to information. In the library online catologue over 25000 titles of electronic books are available full-text. Internet access and a self-serve photocopier are also available in the library.
Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit librarian is Jim Bruce, and the library coordinator is Sherry Garcia. Student staff workers are hired in September and sometimes January and are trained to assist students with research methods, touble-shooting, and use of the online resources. In the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit campus, There is a computer lab in the library with 18 stations. The library loans instructional equipment, including mobile computers, cameras, and video recorders. A spacious layout allows both private and group study areas. Two seminars can be booked for group meetings. This emergency fund is for students who cannot meet their obligations to cover necessities or essential needs while attending NVIT. The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology – NVIT Merrit Elders’ Council can provide emergency resources such as coupons, food vouchers, bus passes, parking passes, etc. up to a maximum of $20.00. If you require emergency funds to help you with necessary living needs, visit the Elders’ Office at either campus.
