Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar established in 1962 with only two Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Science, has made impressive record of service in the cause of quality education. In the pace of decades the University has grown with seven colleges and one Centre for Post-Graduate studies with different departments. Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar is marching forward with sacred mission on teaching, research and extension dedicated to overall growth of the State's economy. The University is having seven constituent colleges and one centre for Post-Graduate studies with annual intake capacity of 1342 students.
Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar has become the Alumnae of 12,934 graduates, 3,883 post-graduates and 213 Ph. Ds. in Agriculture and allied disciplines by the end of 2005-06. Thus, the University could meet the bulk need of the trained manpower of the State in agriculture and allied sectors. Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar has strengthened its research base by establishing eight Zonal Research Stations, four Zonal Sub-stations, 7 Commodity Research Stations and 13 Adaptive Research Stations spread over the state/ along with 48 All India Coordinated Research Projects. Also 41 National Agricultural Technology Projects were in operation. A number of adhoc projects funded by different external agencies are also implemented in the University.
Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar has the responsibility of generating and refining technologies for farmers and developing technology transfer models for use of the departments associated with developmental activities for the benefit of the farming community of the state.
Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar is located in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Upon establishment of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar in 1962, the University inherited a few research stations such as, Economic Botany 1 & 2, Rice Research Station, Jeypore, Agriculture Research Station, Berhampur and Jute Research Station, Kendrapara from the State government. During 1960s Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar research was mainly confined to agriculture and a very few research projects were in operation in the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. With the launching of Orissa Agriculture Development Project (OADP) in 1978 with the World Bank assistance, four Regional Research Stations were established at Bhubaneswar, Chiplima, Keonjhar and Semiliguda representing the four physiographic regions of the state such as Coastal Plain, Central Table Land, North Central Plateau and Western Ghat High land zones, respectively.
The Central Library of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar was formed by integrating the Libraries existing in the Constituent Colleges. It was originally proposed to make the Library building a five storied one and foundation had been laid down accordingly. The foundation stone was laid by Sri S.K. Patil, the then Union Minister for Food and Agriculture on the 30th December 1960. However, in 17th January, 1968 the building was made available for housing the Library and on this day, the Library was officially opened by Dr. Ajudhia Nath Khosla, His Excellency the then Governor of Orissa and the Hon'ble Chancellor of the University. Dr. K. Ramiah former Vice-Chancellor enriched the Library by donating all his life-long collections of rare research reprints and many valuable books.
The Central Library, which is serving the staff and students of seven constituent colleges of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology-OUAT Bhubaneswar, has increased its collection to 90,781 lakhs volumes of books, 133 foreign and Indian subscribed journals, 3374 theses and dissertations as well as Annual and Technical reports (8243) of different Universities and institutions. The library has open access system and daily 400 to 450 readers avail the library facilities. The Text Book Bank provides books to students at nominal charges. Every year the Tribal Welfare Department of the Govt. of Orissa donates books to the Text Book Bank for distribution among S.C & S.T students free of cost. Under inter-library loan system, books, journals and thesis are lent out and borrowed from other libraries and when demanded by the Institutions.
