Serampore Girls College – Hooghly was founded on June 6, 1981 to cater to the local demand for a Girls' College. Late Sm. Anita Devi, the noted educationist and the then President of West Bengal Higher Secondary Council inaugurated the college in the presence of Late Prof. Sambhu Ghosh, the then Minister for Higher Education, Late Bhabani Mukhopadhyay, former Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Govt. of West Bengal, Late Kamal Krishna Bhattacharya, the then MLA and Chairman of Serampore Municipality and other dignitaries.
Serampore Girls College – Hooghly is recognized by the Govt. of West Bengal and University Grants Commission, New Delhi, the college sent its first batch of students in Humanities Group for the Graduation Examination in 1983.Since the date of its foundation the college has marched forward heedlessly to fulfill its goal of promoting female education in this part of the suburb and shaping its students into citizens of high caliber and character through various academic ,library and cultural activities, periodically organized therein.
Starting from a scratch, the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly has grown into a very prominent educational institution with its affiliation in degree Arts and Science. At present the college has about two thousand students on its roll. It has achieved permanent affiliation to the University of Calcutta in 1981 and at present it has affiliation at the degree level in nine Honours and Fifteen general subjects. The smooth running of these departments is ensured by an efficient set of dedicated and highly qualified teachers. The Serampore Girls College – Hooghly has also on its premises a well-stocked library, a reading room, well-equipped laboratories in Laboratory based Subjects, and computers for various departments including Education and Sociology.
Serampore Girls College – Hooghly students are also provided with excellent Library facility which is run by qualified and efficient Librarian and other Reading Room Advisors. The College has a thoroughly computerized office with an efficient set of non-teaching staff. Serampore Girls College – Hooghly students have an easy access to the students' common room, canteen and Games Room. The college with its attractive buildings on large premises is situated in between Serampore Court and Walsh Hospital. Its close proximity to Railway station and Bus stand ensures its easy accessibility.
During its rather brief journey the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly has received several grants and donations from various Govt. and Private Sectors. Apart from the State Government and University Grants Commission, several noted persons have extended their helping hands for the overall developments of the college. For the construction of new college building on the vested land, the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly received Rupees Five Lakhs from MPLAD Fund recommended by Prof. Sudarshan Roy Chowdhury (Ex-M.P.). In 2007,the college has been accredited by NAAC with a decent B+ Grade.
The books in the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly library are kept in closed shelves. Users are allowed to enter the library and use the cabinet catalogue. The library staff assists the users to find books of their choice. Security of books and other materials is ensured by the college guards as well as the employees of the library. In the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly campus, There is a computer facility in the library. Students can use the reading room attached to the central library and they can borrow books for home use. The library is computerized and cataloging is in progress. It does not make use of INTERNET/TELNET facilities. The library is to motivate students and staff to use library books and journals/ Periodicals by displaying the new purchases on the display board. Teachers also encourage library use by recommending text and reference books.

The library always gives information regarding the books and journals available to users and also issues books for home use to the users. The library also gives information regarding department-wise collection of books, old question papers, Journals, Periodicals.
Concession in tuition fees are granted to the poor but Serampore Girls College – Hooghly meritorious students as per government rules and regulations. Government Scholarship and stipend are also offered to the SC, ST, OBC and physically handicapped students of the college. The concession may be discontinued if the students conduct, attendance & academic performance are not satisfactory. No concession is allowed for the students studying self-financing subjects. Railway concession tickets are available for Serampore Girls College – Hooghly students coming by train as per the Indian Railway rules and they may avail themselves for concession rate in bus fare as per of Bus Syndicate (s) are concerned. For Railway Concession students are to produce original Admit Card of Madhyamik Examination as proof of age.

Card must be presented at any time if asked to do so by any teaching or non-teaching staff of the College If the I. Card is lost, the Principal must be informed immediately with intimation to the concerned Police Station and a new I. Card may be issued on payment of requisite fee.
Educational tour / excursion are conducted every year by the department of Geography and other departments. Students can have good quality food at subsided rates from the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly Canteen. The Cell is monitored by senior members of the Academic Staff. It deals with students problems. The college has been enjoying the registered membership of Students' Health Home, A.J.C. Road, Kolkata. The students are entitled to enjoy medical benefits from the Students' Health Home. Serampore Girls College – Hooghly N.S.S unit -1 started its activities since 2006. The volunteers of N.S.S. under the supervision of the program officer used to perform various indoor and outdoor activities and awareness programs in the nearest locality. The activities of N.S.S. are highly appreciated by the University as well as the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
To avoid the loss of cycle of the Serampore Girls College – Hooghly students there is a cycle stand & a cycle keeper. The facility is available for the students against a very small amount. The students are provided with Text Books, Stationery and others reading materials on concession rate. The Students' Union of the college functions to promote Students' Welfare. It assists the Principal in selecting for awarding concession in tuition fee. College offers different kind of Bachelor courses leading to Arts and Science group. The Serampore Girls College – Hooghly has started the cell in collaboration with 'Teachable Solutions Pvt. Ltd.' to provide counseling for placement and training. The college has started the Centre to promote physical and mental health of the students. Interested students can join the centre.
