The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim , a Secondary Teacher Education College was established in 1963 by the Society of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in response to the then urgent need for trained teachers in post liberation Goa. The main goal of the Nirmala Institute of Education at that time was to provide the pedagogical bases for educational expansion through formal teacher education. The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim , initially affiliated to the Bombay University, grew into a highly respected institution providing pre- and in-service teacher education to thousands of teachers. In 1985 it was affiliated to the newly established Goa University. Forty-six years from its inception the College continues to serve the community with dedication. It offers a variety of courses in Education through the The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim , efforts have always been made to conscientize the Teacher-trainees and make them aware of the religious, social and economic situation of the Country.
Within the campus the Institute has two hostels available for students (ladies) The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim has identified a need to teach trainees the necessary skills for computer assisted learning so as to facilitate a renewal of the educational system in Goa towards learner directed classrooms away from the teacher directed factory schooling model. To this end The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim has invested substantially in a computer facility with the best there is to offer in hardware, software and computer training modules. This is a part of the ongoing commitment of the Institute to provide a client-driven service.
The Nirmala Education Society, which is the body that manages Nirmala Institute of Education provides other Educational Services and these include: The Nirmala Kindergaten., Prabodhan Kendra (Guidance & Counseling Centre), and The Child Line Nodal Centre.

The Department of Extension Services is run by the The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim on behalf of the Government of Goa. Since its inception in the year 1972, the Department has been a forerunner providing academic leadership and building professionalism in school education. Through its long journey of commitment to better education, it has provided in-service education to a large number of secondary school teachers besides also catering to the needs of teachers at the +2 stage.
As a full-fledged department, The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim has an Advisory Board, which meets once a year at the beginning of the academic year. Various suggestions made at the meeting are considered for providing in-service inputs.
The The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim Department conducts most of the in-service programmes using the grants provided by the Government and some workshops by collaborating with the super school complexes and the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.
A variety of workshops, seminars are conducted by the The Nirmala Institute of Education – Panjim Department of Extension Services. Workshops on life skills and mental health, assignments, computer assisted learning, multiple intelligences, remedial teaching, career guidance, critical thinking, classroom discipline and classroom management, portfolio assessment, environmental education etc. besides conducting content, methodology and evaluation workshops in different school subjects. Publications and research studies too are conducted by the Department of Extension Services. Committed to excellence, the Department of Extension Services has been able to make a valuable contribution to school education.
