Womens Christian College – Kolkata was founded on 19th July 1945 under the aegis of the Bengal Christian Council by a group of Christian educationists who were committed to the spread of womens education in West Bengal. The founder Principal of the Womens Christian College – Kolkata was Miss Stella Bose while the founder Secretary was Miss Nirajbasini Shome.
The London Missionary Society (LMS) allowed the founders the use of the ground floor and two rooms on the first floor of the present building for one year free of rent. The I.A. Course was started with three students in 1945-46 and the figure rose to twenty-two by the end of the session. Calcutta University affiliation for the I.A. course was granted in 1947-48 and that for the B.A. course in 1948-49 (with Honors only in Bengali). It took some more years for Honors to be extended to English, Sanskrit and Economics.
The Saroj Nalini Memorial Institution donated furniture to the Womens Christian College – Kolkata while the Sisters of the Oxford Mission helped it with books and furniture. The London Missionary Society building was bought along with six cotas of land in May 1952 for Rs. 30,000/-. The property was augmented by the acquisition of two more premises after seven years. An additional building for the B.A. course classes and an assembly hall were built with the help of the State Government and the University Grants Commission. Financial assistance was received from the Methodist mission, the Baptist mission and an anonymous donor from the Church of England.
Miss Stella Bose, the founder principal of Womens Christian College – Kolkata was succeeded in office by Miss Kalyani Shome who was succeeded by by Miss Aloka Ahmed. Miss A. Ahmed is currently serving the college as the Secretary to the Governing body. The first President of the college Governing Body was Bishop S.K. Tarafdar.
It is clear from the above account that Women’s Christian College – Kolkata came into being neither through state patronage nor through missionary initiative. It was an indigenous educational enterprise that lay great store on imparting value-based education to young women hailing from diverse social, economic and religious backgrounds without discriminating on the basis of caste, creed or class. From the beginning the Womens Christian College – Kolkata has had a small hostel which is a boon for outstation students. Tucked away behind one of the main thoroughfares of south Kolkata the college is well protected from the harmful hazards of atmospheric pollution and is yet well connected by bus, tram and the Metro to other parts of the city.

The Womens Christian College – Kolkata has three building – Block A, B and C. The central library is situated in Block C. Women Christian College Library gives an overall view of the library facilities available in the college library. With a long tradition of combined efforts of all the staff members of the library, we have been striving hard to meet the pressing demands of the users by rendering various services to all irrespective of categories. Womens Christian College – Kolkata seek to do so in a personalized and hospitable atmosphere, in spite of some infrastructural limitations. The college Authority is keen to develop the library services as a part of its general growth.
The library is at present providing service manually. We are progressing steadily towards partial automation (i.e. creating databases) but definitely not without a human touch. Womens Christian College – Kolkata Library was started along with the establishment of the college in 1945 in order to cater to the academics and research needs of the faculty, students and non–teaching staff. The college has a General Library along with its eight seminar libraries. The general library is one of the central facilities used by all types of members and ex-students of the College.
The Womens Christian College – Kolkata has a well-equipped Computer Training Center which it runs in collaboration with an organization called Interface 4U which enjoys a tie-up with Webel Informatics Ltd. In their first year students are taught the fundamentals of computer, Windows XP, Ms-Office 2003 and HTM. In their second year they graduate to multimedia software’s such as Photoshop, Sound Forge and Flash and in the third year they are taught Premiere and 3D Max.
A renovated Audio- Visual room having an overhead projector and LCD projector is used by all the departments for teaching purpose, seminars and educational film shows.
This is a huge hall which can accommodate more than hundred students. In the Womens Christian College – Kolkata Seminar Hall, There is a stage with provisions for light and sound effect. UGC sponsored, national level seminars, academic debates, special lectures, drama, cultural programmes and talent search competition are all held in this room.
The cine club of the Womens Christian College – Kolkata operated by Prof. Soma Roy with the purpose of enlightening the students about the importance of cinema as a vibrant art form makes arrangement for the screening of world famous movies. Students have got opportunities to view films like Rashomon and The Day I Became a Woman, the subtle nuances of which have been explained to them by experts on film studies.
The Womens Christian College – Kolkata Common Room gives opportunity to the students for rest and recreation. During cultural programmes, it also serves as green room. Carom board, table tennis board and chess board are some of the facilities available to the students here. A popular TV show on campus activities once featured the actions in the common room. The Womens Christian College – Kolkata canteen provides nourishment at an affordable price. It is a popular gathering spot for students.
The Womens Christian College – Kolkata has a hostel situated within the college premises. It accommodates outstation students belonging to different caste, creed and religion. The Secretary who is in-charge of the hostel pays personal attention to the welfare of the students physically, intellectually and morally, helping them in the building up of character. There are also two resident matrons to look after the domestic need of the boarders.
Under special circumstances, hostelers are permitted to leave Womens Christian College – Kolkata hostel before the term is completed (such cases will be very rare). They shall, however, have to pay @ Rs. 500/- and Rs. 150/- per month towards the Establishment and Seat Rent respectively for the rest of the session.
No exemption or reductions of these charges are allowed. Elaborate rules are enunciated in the Form of Application for Womens Christian College – Kolkata hostel. Establishment charge must be paid within the month. Defaulters are to pay fine @ Rs. 3/- per month which will increase in each month for defaulters. College offers different kind of Bachelor courses leading to Arts and Science stream with different kind of specializations.
