There have been only three Agricultural Colleges started at Bapatla, Hyderabad and Tirupati during the years 1945, 1945 and 1961 representing Coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh respectively whereas the State has been divided in to Seven Agro-climatic Zones as per the concept of National Agricultural Research Project (NARP). Therefore in order to meet the professional man power requirements, three more Agricultural colleges in the Agro-climatic zones namely North Telangana Zone, North Coastal Zone and Scarce Rainfall Zone were established at Aswaraopet and Naira in the year 1989 and at Nandyal (Mahanandi) in 1991 respectively. Thus, Agricultural College – Nandyal, Mahanandi falls under Scarce Rainfall Zone.
Agricultural College – Nandyal is located at Nandyal – R.S – 518502, Andhra Pradesh. Agricultural College – Nandyal , a constituent educational centre of the Acharya N.G. Ranga Agricultural University, Hyderabad had been established during the year 1991 essentially to meet the agri-educational needs of the Scarce Rainfall Zone of Andhra Pradesh. Its global location is at 14-16 degrees longitude on the Northern hemisphere and latitude 78-80 degrees classified under semiarid tropics. Nallamala reserve forest spread over one thousand forty five square kilometers with its vast biodiversity , is an adjunct to the Agricultural College – Nandyal campus. The average range of minimum and maximum temperatures at the campus are 15 - 25 degree centigrade and 35-40 degree centigrade respectively where as the annual rainfall spread over the South West Monsoon is 650 mm.
Agricultural College – Nandyal to start with, was housed in the Cotton Research Laboratories of the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Nandyal with effect from 18th August, 1991 whereas the foundation stone for the college building was laid on 21st January, 1993 by Sri. P.V. Narasimha Rao, the then Prime Minister of India at Mahanandi Cattle Farm spread over 153 hectares, the land which was given free of cost by the Department of Animal Husbandary, Government of Andhra Pradesh with effect from 19th September 1992. The Financial out lay during the first five year period of the college was Rs. 755.44 Lakhs which includes Pay and Allowances of the establishment and Contingencies etc., Agricultural College – Mahanandi buildings at Mahanandi were occupied with effect from 9th February, 1996.
Agricultural College – Nandyal has got the full fledged agrometerological observatory located in an ideally suitable place occupying an area of 0.5 Acre for recording all the weather parameters namely Air temperature, Relative humidity, Rainfall, Sunshine hours, Wind direction, Wind velocity, Evoparation, Soil temperature and also equipped with automatic weather station from which data could be downloaded using lap top computer. Poly House with Micro Irrigation System is being established for the purpose of propogation of endangered plant species and horticultural plantations.
The Bioenergy park at Agricultural College – Nandyal has been established where there are number of medicinal plants and ornamental plants including the endangered species like Calatropis, Entada, Wild Jasmine. The park is grown using only the vermicompost with out the addition of any chemical fertilisers. Seed quality is one of the most vital and essential attribute for crop yields. The breeder and foundation seed production of Rice, Cotton, Castor, Sunflower, Red gram and Ground nut and the propagation of Horticultural crops by the production of Mango seedlings and grafts has been taken up as income generation activity.
At Agricultural College – Nandyal Biogas plant (NEDCAP model: Deenabandhu) has been established on 20.6.2002 and the biogas obtained is being used for the Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory. The spent slurry obtained is used as starter for the decomposition of organic wastes of plant origin for vermiculture. The vermicompost produced from earth worm (Eisenea foetida) is being used for different plants in Bioenergy Park, tree plantations and horticultural crops. Apiculture using the honey bees Apis mellifera has been established as an income generation activity as well as for demonstration to the students and visiting farmers. Agricultural College – Nandyal offers Bachelor of Science in Agriculture.
