Presidency College - Kolkata is intimately entwined with the intellectual history of Bengal and India. The foundation of the Hindoo College in 1817 has had far reaching effects on the social and cultural history of the country. The college was renamed as Presidency College and brought under the direct control of the Government in 1855. The college was founded with the expressed intention of providing modern education to the Indian students. Though originally meant for the boys of the Hindu elite, the college was thrown open to all communities after 1855. The liberal, secular, scientific spirit that marked the advent of Indian modernity was born in this college. Indeed, the history of the Presidency College merges into the history of the Bengal, and by extension, the Indian Renaissance.

The library has a rich collection of old and rare books, archival records, valuable reference books, important journals, educational CDs and floppies for the use of students, staff, research scholars and special borrowers. The total number of books in Presidency College Library is around 3.5 lakh, the number of periodicals is 1.5 lakh and also there are thousands of non-book materials, including CDs and floppies. Presidency College - Kolkata Library introduced the Web-based fully integrated multi-user library system LIBSYS 4 ( Release 5.0 ) for the complete library automation including LAN among its five branches, Web-OPAC and the Internet browsing facilities. Besides the main campus, the college hostels- the Eden Hindu Hostel (Boys’ Hostel) and the Girls’ Hostel have their own campus with areas of 2 acres and 0.3 acres, respectively. The Government Eden Hindu Hostel, established in the year 1886, is a collegiate hostel situated at 3 Peary Charan Sarkar Street, Kolkata 700073, adjacent to the college and accommodates the male students and research fellows of Presidency College, and a few students of Sanskrit College, Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, and Moulana Azad College.
Presidency College - Kolkata hostel has the capacity to accommodate 272 boarders. The hostel has eight guest-rooms having the rental charges of Rs. 60.00 (common bath), Rs. 80.00 (attached bath) and Rs. 100.00 (3-seated with attached bath) per day. Parents of the students as well as guests of the college are allowed to stay there. The central old building consists of 6 wards including kitchen, dining hall and staff-quarters occupying a total area of 26,000 sq. ft. The following table illustrates the hostel accommodation.

Presidency College 175th Anniversary Girls’ Hostel, established in the year 1992, is situated at the Salt Lake City and accommodates a total of 92 girl students of UG and PG classes of the college. The lodging comprises one fourteen-bedded dormitory, seven four-seated rooms on the ground floor, ten single-seated and ten four-seated rooms on the first floor. Other facilities include one dining hall, one library room, common room and one dormitory for kitchen staff.
