The inception of Ramananda College - Bankura in 1945 was the beginning of providing higher education to the otherwise marginalized youths of this locality. The “Temple Town” Bishnupur, a Sub-Divisional Head Quarter is endowed so far with this only co-educational Degree College, which has been serving for more than half a century as the Alma Mater of thousands of students coming from rural Bengal.
Ramananda College - Bankura is situated at Bishnupur : Bankura, West Bengal. The proposal to establish a centre of higher education was initially made by Sri Ramnalini Chakraborty, freedom fighter and social worker of Bishnupur. Initiative was taken by Sri Radhagobinda Roy, founder Principal of this college and Ex-minister, Government of West Bengal and many other eminent personalities of the town and the district. Ramananda College - Bankura was named after the illustrious son of the district of Bankura, Sri Ramananda Chattopadhyay, noted journalists, editor and scholar.
The sapling of the past has become the full-grown tree of the present. It fulfils the academic need of the students and nourishes them with the knowledge of real value. Ramananda College - Bankura was initially affiliated to the University of Calcutta and later on to the University of Burdwan and duly recognized by the U.G.C. Ramananda College - Bankura with best academic standard, offers Honours & General courses in Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Physiology. It has separate morning shift for the Commerce section. Every year some students secure ranks in the University Final Examinations. The rate of success in the University Final Examination is more than 90%. Along with this excellent academic performance the students are involved in social activities like Extension Programme, Adult Education Programme, organizing Health Camp, Plantation Programme, etc. With equal enthusiasm the students serve the nation by being an integral part of N.S.S. & N.C.C. units of the college.
Initially Ramananda College - Bankura was affiliated to the Calcutta University and later on to the University of Burdwan and duly recognized by the UGC under 2f and 12B. As the College was established before independence it predates both UGC and the University of Burdwan. In 2007, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited the College at B++ level with 83.15 score which is the highest in the Districts of Bankura, Purulia and Birbhum of West Bengal. With the opening of a Post Graduate course (M.Sc.) in Botany, the Botany Department of the college has become a constituent unit of the Department of Botany, University of Burdwan and the College is now enjoying the status of a constituent College.
Ramananda College - Bankura is a partially residential one with a total campus area of 37,635.82 sq.m. Apart from the college main building and other academic blocks, housing different existing departments, the College campus accommodates four students’ hostels, a spacious auditorium “Biram Bhavan”, a museum, a playground, a non-resident students’ centre (NRSC), students’ health home and staff quarters. Teachers, students and non-teaching staff enjoy the canteen facility within the College premises. The College is well equipped with hygienic toilet blocks, gymnasium, cycle stands, students’ common rooms (separate for boys and girls) and a fully computerized office.
Ramananda College - Bankura has Central Library consisting of more than 40,000 books and journals and separate Seminar Libraries for each department. The Central Library is fully computerized with two spacious reading rooms. Photocopying service is an added facility to cater the needs of students and teachers. The item that requires special mention is a collection of rare and old valuable books. Outside research-scholars are allowed to avail this resource with special permissions.
Ramananda College - Bankura has four hostels (two for boys, one for girls and a Swabalambi Chhatrabas, a boys’ hostel for poor and meritorious students) with a total seat capacity of 250. Superintendents and in-charge(s) look after these hostels. Hostel boarders enjoy pure drinking water (through aquaguard), telephone, television facilities and healthcare services through Students’ Health Home.
All science departments possess well-equipped laboratories for the Honours and General practical classes. These laboratories are kept in pace, on a regular basis, with the advancing and modernizing syllabi and the need of students. Ramananda College - Bankura has also a ‘Central Instrumentation Facility’ with a number of modern and scientific instruments. At present there are more than 26 computers distributed in the office, library and academic departments. Students and teachers enjoy the facility of Internet. Modern audio-visual teaching aids like LCD-projector, overhead projector etc. are also used to impart effective teaching. All academic departments, office, library and students’ union office are well communicated through intercom telephone services.
Ramananda College - Bankura has NCC and NSS units both for boys and girls. The NCC training is conducted on Sundays. Regular NSS activities are organized on Sundays and NSS classes are conducted in the middle of the week and in the middle of the class hour. Special camping programmes are organized in the adopted village. Other programmes on different issues are held in phases through out the year.
Ramananda College - Bankura has a students’ health centre with regularly attending physicians. It is a branch of Students’ Health Home, Kolkata, and the main centre of this Sub-Division. Students of this College and other educational institutions avail the medical facility from this center at a nominal cost (Rs 2/- per day) inclusive of the cost of medicine. Staffs and teachers and the students enjoy canteen facility within the college premises.
Ramananda College - Bankura has a Special Study Centre of IGNOU, which offers professional & job-oriented programmes. For water supply there are two deep tube wells with submersible water pumps in the college campus. Students, teachers and non-teaching staff can avail pure drinking water through aquaguards. There are two electrical generator sets (total 35 KVA) in the campus to support fans, lights, electrical equipments, laboratories and computers.
