Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata was established in 1985 and it had been duly accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, (NAAC) Bangalore. Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata was founded in September 1985 as a consequence of a long drawn mass movement in the early seventies of the last century led by liberal democratic and education loving people of the locality. As a result of the mass movement of the local people, a preparatory committee was formed under the leadership of Sri Santimoy Bhattacharya.
The committee requested the Rajpur Municipality to sanction a plot of land that would be suitable for the establishment of the Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata . The Rajpur Municipality, now renamed as Rajpur Sonarpur Municipality provided the necessary land and the people from all walks of life in the locality donated generously to raise a building for the new institution. Since then the utmost endeavor of the college has been the constant up gradation of its strengths and resources. Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata is affiliated to the University of Calcutta, which offers a wide range of subjects and facilities to its learners. Three well equipped faculties namely Science, Arts and Commerce have set a high watermark of teaching and learning which is certainly in tune with the heritage of the land.
Being the erstwhile center of the 19th century Bengal Renaissance this region is the birthplace of luminaries like Dwarakanath Vidyabhusan, the editor of Bengali weekly Somprakash, Rajnarain Bose, the Father of Indian nationalism and Ramnarayan Tarkaratna who authored the first Bengali drama 'Kulin Kulasarbaswa'. The ancestral village of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is not far from the Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata . Such a rich academic and cultural heritage provides a solid foundation to this seat of learning and with the active involvement of a group of committed teachers and non-teaching staff this institution is surging ahead. Its progress has been rightly recognized by NAAC.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata started its journey in 1985 with 6 departments in the arts faculty offering general (pass) course. A policy of steady academic expansion pursued subsequently resulted in the institution having 14 departments in various discipline of Arts, Science and Commerce.
One of the main attractions of Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata is its sprawling campus encompassing a big play ground, a large water body, better known as Bosepukur, two buildings and large compound (25 Bighas approx). The surroundings are quiet, serene and beautiful. This Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata is trying to adapt itself a new way of thinking. The semi-urban location of the college caters to needs of students who come from the grass-root level: some of them are even first-generation learners.
They want to enrichment of collegiate education by providing learners most updated knowledge and services in Science, Arts and Commerce subjects. The mission of the Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata is to organize vocational training in different career oriented courses for the students to help them acquire additional skill which is necessary either for self-employment or to make them more eligible for jobs in a competitive market, To develop a new outlook of the taught so that they can prepare themselves to cope with the rapidly changing academic scenario, and to maintain a congenial and healthy atmosphere in the institution for all round development of mind and body of our students.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata felt that after passing out from the college, the students who need some job oriented training to get a job and find a place in the society. The college cannot deny it's responsibility in this regard. So the college entered into a tie-up with the most reputed institute of West Bengal which is "The George Telegraph" who has opened an admission wing in our college for the college students.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata entered into a memorandum of understanding with this premier institution that if number of admission exceeds one hundred then the admitted students will be trained within the college premises instead of the regional training center, where the students are currently being trained. For the Students of Bio-Science department, Computer Science Department, Physics Department and also of Geography Department there are six separate and well-equipped laboratories. Those laboratories have been set up to impart practical training to the students of their subjects. All laboratories provide latest equipments and necessary furniture.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata classes are generally held between 10-30 a.m. and 4-30 p.m. on each day except Sundays. Class routine provides for intensive study of all subjects, as per University and Government rules. Attendance at classes is obligatory. Permission to appear at public examinations of Calcutta University depend on satisfactory performance and progress in class tests, Annual and Test Examination of the Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata . No students will be allowed to sit for the University Examinations if he or she remains absent in the class tests and Test Examinations of the College. Identity card will be issued to each bonafide student of the college after admission on production of a passport size photograph.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata magazine is usually published once a year by the student's union and every student is entitled to have a copy of it. Students get the opportunity to give expression to their creative talents through writing in the magazine. There is a cycle stand in front of the main gate. The students using bicycle must keep their cycles at the stand. Cycles must not be placed elsewhere in the campus.
Canteens function from inside the Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata campus. Light snacks, tea, coffee and cold drinks etc. are available at reasonable rates. The college has a central library with open access system. It has 8500 books which includes both text books and other reference books including some reputed journals. The library has a book Bank facility for use by the poor and meritorious students. Facilities like reprography, reading rooms etc. are available inside the library. Daily Newspapers and Employment News are also available in the library.
Moreover, each Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata department has its own departmental library for the requirement of the students and the teachers of the department. On payment of the library deposit each student will be provided with a library card (against which books will be issued) which is strictly non-transferable. During their off-periods or of other times including summer recess. Students may read Text & reference books etc. available in the library. They can also borrow books as available in the stock for home use, subject to observance of the Rules and Regulations of the college library.
Every student of Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata has free access to browse, pick up, read and borrow books directly from the rack. Students must behave responsibly and cooperate with the library staff to make the new system successful. Rules for the return of books are to be strictly followed. Students will be allowed to keep books lent to them up to 7 days at the most. If he/she fails to return the books by this time a fine of Rs. 2.00 (two) has to be paid by the defaulting student for each day.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata offers facilities of physical exercises to its students through games like Foot-ball, Volley-ball, Cricket, Kabadi and encourages participation in athletics at the Annual Sports Meet. The College is affiliated with the Calcutta University Sports Board and participates in Inter Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata Competitions, conducted by the University Sports Board, DPI, and Govt. of West Bengal. There is a big playground, larger than the average, for outdoor games, particularly football, volleyball and cricket. A reputed 'A' division football player has been appointed by the college to coach the football players in the college play ground.
Sonarpur Mahavidyalaya – Kolkata students can avail of the Gym facilities by paying a nominal monthly subscription of Rs. 20/- to the College. An instructor appointed by the College will guide the students in the use of the Gymnasium. College offers different kind of Bachelor and Master Courses leading to arts, Science and Commerce group in various specializations.
