Anna University was established as a unitary type of University that offered higher education in Engineering, Technology and Sciences.
Anna University was formed by bringing together two renowned technical institutions in Madras.

Anna University is spread over 100 hectares and is located in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University and is spread over 20 hectares. Keeping in mind the various needs of the University community, both the campuses have a variety of buildings. There is also a third campus that is spread over 80 hectares and is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entrepreneurship Development Park, and Convention Centre will hopefully be there in the same campus in the coming future.
The
Anna University Library that was established in the year 1978 gained independence in December 2000. It is a three storied building which is located at the eastern side of the main campus. The MIT campus also has a library of area 1256 sq m. With 10,157 registered users, the library is fully equipped and is up to date. Ramanujan Computing Centre is the technology provider for students, researchers and teaching community to take care of their requirements. Internet is also provided with an impressive bandwidth of 48 Mbps and 1 Gbps from NKN for Ministry of Human Resource Development. The Fiber backbone establishes strong connectivity in every corner of the enormous campus.
Anna University offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences which is relevant to the current needs of our society. Recently formed Centre for Distance Education caters to the technical educational needs of the country. The centre offers professional MBA and MCA, M.Sc in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Information Technology and Software Engineering degree programmes since the year 2007.
Anna University also has Centre for International Affairs (CIA) which coordinates the bilateral research and academic programmes with overseas Institutions/Universities through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Exchange of Faculty/Students, Foreign Language Programmes and conduct of International Joint Seminars/Conferences. More than 68 foreign Universities at present have established academic and research collaborations through MoUs with the University. The CIA also has Overseas Professor Scheme with Thirty Professors from the USA, Germany, Australia, Japan, Sweden, France, Italy, Switzerland and England. These Professors have been visiting the University and are working together with faculty and students.
